Akkadian is an extinct East Semitic language, spoken in Akkad, a part of Mesopotamia. It was written in cuneiform and comes in basically two dialects, Assyrian and Babylonian. The language was widely used from about 3500 BC and is recognized as the oldest Semitic language for which records exist.
