Research Data Management

From All Skies Encyclopaedia

This encyclopaedia is technically a "mediawiki" that can be edited only by a limited group of people. You cannot create an account and you cannot apply for an account in this system. The right to edit is granted to the members of IAU Working Group Star Names and to the WG's research partners.

RDM: Backup Strategy

The research data and knowledge shared by researchers in this encyclopaedia is currently hosted on a server at the University of Jena, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (FMI), Germany.

The server is backed up weekly to a special data space at the FMI. The backups contain the entire contents of the disc, including the system. The data storage of specially configured user programs is not known to us for the time being. The format of these backups is 'RAW', and these backups are viewed with programs from the virtualization environment used (KVM/qemu).

As the system is hosted in Jena, it is administrated according to European laws of data security.

Living Data/ Data Life Cycle

The data (knowledge in form of text, images, videos, audio-files and other media) entered here by researchers is shared in this encyclopaedia after publication with instruments of scientific self-control (e.g. peer-reviewing, code-revision, ...). Its quality and integrity is therefore approved by the scientific community before it is entered here, and all references are given in the text. It is only processed data that is stored here (e.g. the visualization of results) but the original raw data may possibly (if relevant) be linked at other repositories of scientific data.

Still, new findings may change the scientific opinion. Thus, the time stamp of the information provided on any specific one of the pages is highly important!

Due to the copy right by publishing houses for books and journals, the textual information and also some media shared here might be specifically developed (varied from other sources) for this encyclopaedia. Please respect the copyright of the authors by crediting them: all information (authors, date) are automatically displayed in the bluish bottom row of each page.

Responsibility

Currently, Susanne M. Hoffmann administrates and maintains the system technically.

As the system is hosted at the University of Jena, in case of emergency the technicians of the FMI can provide support.
