Mesopotamia is the land between and around the two rivers Euphrates and Tigres. As writing in clay was invented here, some of the oldest attested written cultures are preserved from this area, among them Sumerian and Akkadian (Babylonian and Assyrian). The Sumerians inhabited only the south of this country, the Babylonians and the Assyrians have a long lasting history of fratricidal wars, shared and distinguished cultures.

In the 3rd and early 2nd millennium BCE, the Indo-Germanic language Sumerian was the written in cuneiform. In the late 2nd millennium the Semitic languages became predominant, first the Akkadian, later Aramaean language.
