As writing in clay was invented here, some of the oldest attested written cultures are preserved from this area, among them Sumerian and Akkadian (Babylonian and Assyrian). The Sumerians inhabited only the south of this country, the Babylonians and the Assyrians have a long lasting history of fratricidal wars, shared and distinguished cultures.
