mulŠU.GI (𒀯𒋗𒄀) is an ancient Mesopotamian asterism.

II. Deity.

         Almost nothing is known of Shugi as a deity. His name is absent in the lists of gods, as well as in the main lexical texts, where the constellation gišgigir is widely represented. Mythologemes in which Shugi would appear as an actor, as well as rituals associated with him, are unknown. His role as charioteer to Enmesharra's chariot, indicated as if by the identification šu.gi = maḫāru ša gišgigir, can hardly be accepted, since it is known from other texts that the constellation gišgigir formed only a part of mulšu.gi. The astrological texts add nothing more definite.

III. Symbol.

         A clothed male figure with a beard. Description in VAT 9428 obv. 1-3: ˹mulŠU.GI˺ ṣal-mu lu-bu-uš-tu4 z[i-iq-na za-qi]n / [...] i-na ZAG-šu2 [dir-rat na]-ši / GUB3-šu2 ina UGU MUL.MUL LA2-at2 ina SAG-[šu2 1 MUL] ˹e˺-ṣir "An old man, a clothed human figure with a [bea]rd, / [...] in his right hand, [hol]ds [a whip]. / His left [hand] extends above the Star Cluster. [A star] is depicted on [his] head." [Weidner 1927, 74; Beaulieu et al. 2018, 21, 24].

IV. Identification.

The constellation of Shuga generally corresponds to the modern Perseus, but it extended much further south and towards the northern stars of Taurus, which forms the Chariot constellation (gišGIGIR = dEn-me-šar2-ra), which was in the feet of Shuga [Weidner 1927, 77-78; 3. Erg. 2, 327; G. 378, I].

         = Perseus + northern part of Taurus (?) [Waerden 1949, 13].

         = Perseus + the northern stars of the Hyades (Hyades) [Weidner 1957-59, 79a].

         = Perseus; when the constellation GIGIR(=Enmešarra) was included, it reached as far north as Taurus [MA, 137].

VI. Astrology.

Identifications:

        (1) = Enmesharra; [mulŠU].GI TA kin-ṣi-šu2 EN a-si-di-šu2: dEn-me-šar2-ra šum-[šu] "The [Ol]d Man, from his knee to his heel = [his] name Enmesharra" [TU, 18 r. 15; Weidner 1925, 352].

        (2) = Mars (?); cf. [Bezold 1920, 110:72, 122:174; G. 378, IV A 1].

        (3) = Jupiter (?) [Bezold 1920, 122:173; G. 378, IV A 2].

        (3ʹ) = mulMAR.GID2.DA, see prediction (16) below.

        The constellation name mulŠU.GI was undoubtedly used as a name for one of the planets (see, e.g., predictions 14, 15 below), but to which planet is not entirely clear. Bezold's arguments in favor of identifying mulŠU.GI with Mars and Jupiter do not seem to be convincing.

        (4) = Enlil; mulSA5 ša2 ana IGI dEn-lil2 IGI-it IM.KUR.RA / dEn-lil2 a-na mulŠU.GI i-qab-bi "The red star, which (stands) ahead of Enlil and (facing) the east. 'Enlil,' is what they say, referring to the Old Man." [BPO 2, III 34-34a].

        (5) The Old Man's chest is dark; DIŠ ulŠU.GI GABA-su du-ʼ-u2-mat2 E2.GAL šar-ra-qu i-pal-la-[šu2] "If the Old Man's chest is very dark: thieves will breach into the palace." II. Божество.

О Шуги как божестве почти ничего не известно. Его имя отсутствует в списках богов, а также в основных лексических текстах, где широко представлено созвездие gišgigir. Неизвестны мифологемы, в которых Шуги выступал бы в качестве действующего лица, а также связанные с ним ритуалы. Его роль возницы при колеснице Энмешарры, на что указывает как будто отождествление šu.gi  = maḫāru ša gišgigir, едва ли может быть принята, поскольку из других текстов известно, что созвездие gišgigir составляло лишь часть mulšu.gi. Астрологические тексты не добавляют ничего более определенного.

III. Символ.

Мужская одетая бородатая фигура. IV. Отождествление.

Созвездие Шуги в целом соответствовало современному Персею, однако простиралось значительно южнее, до северных звезд Тельца, которые образовывали созвездие Колесница (gišGIGIR = dEn-me-šar2-ra), находившееся в ногах Шуги [Weidner 1927, 77–78; 3. Erg. 2, 327; G. 378, I].

Имя созвездия mulŠU.GI, несомненно, использовалось в качестве названия для одной из планет (см., например, ниже предсказания 14, 15), однако какой именно, не вполне ясно. Аргументы Бецольда в пользу отождествления mulŠU.GI с Марсом и Юпитером не кажутся нам убедительными.

(4) = Энлиль; mulSA5 ša2 ana IGI dEn-lil2 IGI-it IM.KUR.RA / dEn-lil2 a-na mulŠU.GI i-qab-bi «Красная звезда, которая впереди Энлиля (стоит), (обратившись) к востоку. “Энлиль”, — так говорят, имея в виду Старика» [BPO 2, III 34–34a].
