Mesopotamian constellation APIN identified with the bright stars in Cassiopeia (Hoffmann and Horowitz 2022), previously also suggested for the regions of And and Tri.

^mulAPIN (𒀯𒀳; or ^{mul giš}APIN) means "Plough", Akkadian equivalent epinnu, and designates an ancient Mesopotamian constellation.

It is the first constellation mentioned in the first list of the earliest astronomical compendium (MUL.APIN) and so gives the series its name. As such the asterism must be remarkably bright and easily recognizable. Yet the identificastion of the Plough has remained in dispute. Hoffmann and Horowitz (2022) argued for the identification with the brightest stars of Cassiopeia.

II. Deity.

           The plough has been known as a religious symbol since the Early Dynastic period. On the seals of the 3rd millennium B.C. it was portrayed as an attribute of a "deity in a boat", as an attribute of a goddess or deity, in scenes of religious processions, in scenes of plowing, etc. [Amier 1961; Boehmer 1968; Seidl 1968, 125-128.] It is not known with which deity the Plow constellation was connected with. In the Kudurru the plough has been correlated with the god Ningirsu [Seidl 1968, 127], in the list of gods K.4339 rev. iii 30—with Ninurta (^dapin = min(=^dNin-urta) [CT 25, 13:30]), but it is not clear whether these identifications have astral significance.

Prayers and rituals.

             (1) The ritual of the "washing of the mouth" (mīs pî) or "revival" of the statue-deity, see (Kurtik z10) Zibānītum, II.

             (2) The prayer of the flour-miller over the millstone: ^mulAPIN ina ṣēri(EDIN) epin zēri(^gišAPIN.ŠE.NUMUN) iṣ-mi-du "O Star-Plough, they have harnessed (a pair of bulls) to the plough-sower in the field" (beginning of the prayer) [CAD E, 236-237; i 91a; RAcc, 63:44].

III. Symbol.

          Plow. For descriptions and images in glyptics of various models of the Mesopotamian plow see [Salonen 1968; Black-Green, 1948]. [Salonen 1968; Black-Green 1992, 149; Hempelmann 2004, 38-40]. The figure of the Plow constellation corresponds probably to the images of plow-sowing (found on seals and kudurru), which included a device for sowing seeds [Salonen 1968, Taf. VI-VII; Kurtik 2007, Fig. 47, 48].

Identifications:

              (2) = Mercury; [DIŠ ^mulMU.BU.KEŠ₂].DA ana ^mulAPIN TE ^dDil-bat ana ^dGU₄.UD TE-ma "[If the Yo]ke approaches towards the Plow, (it means:) Venus approaches Mercury" [ACh Ištar, 30:17].

               (3) = Saturn; see above for identifications with Ninurta.

               (4) = Jupiter(?); the supposed identification with Jupiter in [Bezold 1920, 122:185; G. 39, III 4] has no textual confirmation as far as we know.

Predictions:

          (5) Plow and the beginning of plowing: ^mulAPIN a-na AB.SIN₂ šu-ri-i "Plow to start the furrow" [BPO 2, I 3, III 2].

          (6) Venus and the Plow(= Mars); DIŠ ^mulDil-bat ana ^mulAPIN TE... "If Venus comes close to the Plow: wives will violate marital fidelity, adultery will spread in the country, women will not live with their husbands, men will not live with their wives" [BPO 3, K.2226:32]; parallel [ibid., K.7169+:2, K.35:24].         

          (7) Plow (= Mars) and Saturn; DIŠ ^mulAPIN KASKAL 20 KUR-ud ... ^mulṣal-bat-a-nu ^mulUDU.IDIM.SAG.UŠ i-kaš-ša₂-ad-ma "If the Plow constellation stands in the Way of the Sun (= Saturn): famine of cattle; there will be famine. Mars reaches Saturn" [ARAK, 49 r. 4-6]; for parallels see. [ACh Suppl., 49:9, 50:28, 55:27]. This prediction assumes identities: ^mulAPIN = ^mulṣal-bat-a-nu "Plough = Mars", KASKAL 20 = ^mulUDU.IDIM.SAG.UŠ "Way of the Sun = Saturn", see (Kurtik k17) KASKAL.UTU.

          (8) Plow (= Mars) and Scorpius; DIŠ ^mulAPIN ana ^mulGIR₂.TAB TE... ^dṣal-bat-a-nu ina ŠA₃ ^mulGIR₂.TAB^? GUB-az^?-ma "If the Plow constellation comes close to Scorpius: the ruler will die from a scorpion’s sting, variant: he will be captured in his palace; [after him] his [son] will not inherit the throne; the ideology of the country will change, the country will accept another overlord and life in the country will not be stable; lamentation of the great gods for the country. (This means:) Mars stands inside Scorpius." [ARAK, 502 r. 1-3]; parallel [ibid., 219].

          (9) Crab and Plow; DIŠ ^mulAL.[LUL ana ^mulAPIN TE] ... "If Can[cer comes close to the Plow]: the plow of the country [will (idly) hang on a peg], there [will be] flood in the country..." [ARAK, 452:1-3].
