MUL.AN.DIRI.A

dMUL.AN.DIRI.A (𒀭𒀯𒀭𒋛𒀀𒀀) is a Sumerian name for Venus. Its sense seems to be mul an.a diri(g). The star which is great(est) in the sky, or drifts through the sky. The Sumerian verb diri has a number of meanings including diri(g) = Akkadian watāru, 'to exceed, to be the most,' and diri(g) as a very of motion, for example as in

Var.: dMul.an.a.diri; lit. "The Dominant Star in the Sky, "The Drifting Star in the Sky" — an epithet of Venus [G. 275]. Only in the list of gods AN:dAnum (IV 185): dmul.an.diri.a = min(=dIš8-tar2 mul.<meš> = dIštar kakkabī) "Star of the sky reigning = Goddess of the stars" [CT 25, 31:15; Litke 1998, 161:185 + notes].
