KAL.NE

^ul/mul4KAL.NE (𒌌𒆗𒉈). This asterism is known from two omens, one of which is included in the series MUL.APIN. Given that both signs KAL and NE have numerous readings, we cannot how this name is to be read, but the context in MUL.APIN, in a sequence of omens for constellations and planets, suggests that KAL.NE also belongs to this general category.

MUL.APIN. mul4KAL.NE IB2.TAG4 RU ana 4 MUL4.ME ša2 MUL4.MUL4 TE U URU ḪIme "If the star KAL.NE ... (and) approaches the four stars of the Pleiades: the ruler(?) of the city will be prosperous(?)" (II iii 32) [MA, 112]. This is the only text known to us that speaks as if there were 4 stars within Pleiades, where in which we would usually speculate 7 stars, see (Kurtik m35) MUL2.MUL2. In the new edition of MUL.APIN this line looks different: DIŠ mul5KAL.NE IB2.TAG4 RU ana 4 MUL5.ME šá mul5AŠ.IKU TE U URU GAM.ME "If the star KAL.NE ... (and) approaches the 4 stars of the Field (var.: Stars - “stars” or “star cluster”?): the ruler of the city will die" [Hunger-Steele 2018, 158-9]. The determinative mul5 here corresponds to mul4.
