From All Skies Encyclopaedia

Etymology and History
From the Turkish word yildiz, "star." In Renaissance times this common noun was erroneously said to be a Turkish name for the Pole Star (α UMi). Misspelled as "Yildun," the word was arbitrarily applied as a star name to δ UMi in recent times.
