Asellus Australis is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Latin. It is the name of HIP42911 (δ Cnc, HR 3461) in constellation Cnc.

Etymology and History

From their joint Roman name the Aselli (and also Asini), "the Asses" of "Donkeys", being a translation of these stars' Greek name. Reapplied in Renaissance times, along with the Latin distinctions of "northern" and "southern".
