Adhara is a modern star name adopted by the International Astronomical Union in the IAU-Catalog of Star Names (IAU-CSN). Its origin is Arabic. It is the name of HIP 33579 (ε CMa, HR 2618) in constellation CMa.

Etymology and History

Applied in recent times from the Arabic asterism name al-(adhara, "the Virgins", for ε, δ, η and ο2 CMa. The significance of the name is unknown.
