|authorlink=
* publication-date (or date): Date of publication.
|coauthors=
* date: Date of authorship, if different from date of publication. This is most useful in older newspapers where days or weeks could pass between authorship and publication. If only date is used, it will be treated as the date of publication.
|date=
* year: Year of authorship or publication. (Mandatory for use with links from :Template:Harvard citation. In some situations, the template may be able to derive a year from the full date.)

* publication-place: The city of the periodical's publication. This is not recommended for established and widely-distributed periodicals (Vanity Fair), or periodicals in which the title contains the place of publication (New York Times). If more than one town/city is listed on the title page, give the first one or the location of the publisher's head office. If the city is not well-known, you may add a county, region, or state. States in the U.S. are denoted by a two-letter code; for example: <code>place=Paris, TX</code> (no period at the end). Where the publisher is a university and the place or location is included in the name of the university, do not use this parameter.
|volume=
* place: City from which the article was written. Generally, this is used to denote the dateline city of a newspaper article.
|issue=
* publisher: The name of the periodical's publisher. Use of this parameter is not recommended for most periodicals, unless it would help the reader in locating a copy. Omit terms such as Publishers, Co., Inc., Ltd., etc., but retain the words Books or Press.

Although it may appear redundant to include multiple ids for articles, it is helpful for many editors who only have access to a certain resource. If only one ID is to be included, the DOI should be used, as this is the universal standard preferred by professional publications. Specifying a link as a doi, pmid etc is always preferable to including it as a url parameter, as it makes it clear that the link is accurate and stable.

Template:Mergewith

Cite journal is for formatting references to articles in magazines and academic journals in a consistent and legible manner. It can be used at the end of the article, directly in the References section. It can also be placed within tag using other citation templates; for example:

Text in the article.

Notes

Although it may appear redundant to include multiple ids for articles, it is helpful for many editors who only have access to a certain resource. If only one ID is to be included, the DOI should be used, as this is the universal standard preferred by professional publications. Specifying a link as a doi, pmid etc is always preferable to including it as a url parameter, as it makes it clear that the link is accurate and stable.

Further Examples

Formal citation

Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).
Include URL link to free-article, pre-print or abstract; also supply access date unless the URL is known to be stable.

Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).
Specify the DOI to provide a permanent link. Also give the PMID abstract for medical articles, and the URL if the article is free. PubMed Central free full-text repository links may also be supplied and will link the title if URL not specified, else as additional linked PMC value at the end of the citation

Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).

Whereas if the url had not been specified, then the title is linked to PubMed Central's copy of the article and no duplicate PMC link is shown for compactness:

Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).

If the doi link is broken, then use of the doi_brokendate parameter unlinks the doi value, indicates when the doi-problem was first noticed, and will also add the page to "Category:Pages with DOIs broken since YYYY":

Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).
Other examples
 •
Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).
 •
Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).
 •
Lua error: bad argument #1 to "get" (not a valid title).
