AŠ.ME is an ancient Mesopotamian asterism.

= šamšatu,

• 1) solar disk, the Sun,
• 2) the false Sun (parhelion),
• 3) the false Moon (paraselene),
• 4) Saturn, which was considered the Star of the Sun.

The term was used mainly in the EAE series texts. When the solar disk was meant directly, the expression AŠ.ME SAG.UŠ = šamšatu kajamātu (or kajāntu) or AŠ.ME ša₂ ginâ was used, probably meaning "normal solar disk". [AHw, 1158b; CAD Š/1, 332-334].

(1) The solar disk; DIŠ AŠ.ME ša₂ gi-na-a IGI.MEŠ-šu₂ kat₃-mu-ma IM.U_x.LU rak-bat ... "If the eyes of the normal solar disk are closed and the south wind blows: locusts will devastate the country, variant: the country will commit sin" [van Soldt 1995, 18, Table 24 I 2]; DIŠ AŠ.ME ša₂ gi-na-a ŠE.ER.ZI-ša₂ ma-aq-tu₄ ... "If the shining of the normal solar disk diminishes: ominous omens will roam the country and the gods will be angry; there will be famine in the country, variant: there will be an epidemic in the country". (4) Saturn; DIŠ AŠ.ME AN.TA-nu 30 KI.TA-nu 30 GUB-iz / SUḪUŠ ^gišGU.ZA i-ka-na / LUGAL KUR ina kit-ti-šu₂ GUB-az "If the solar disk (=Saturn) stands above the moon (or) below the moon: the foundations of the throne will be firm; the king of the country will be committed to truth (and justice)." [ARAK, 95:3-5; 297:3-7], it is clear from the context of the report that AŠ.ME in this case denotes Saturn, see also [Brown 2000, 58].
